The government today announced funding of £300,000 to enable a series of exchanges between museums in the UK and China.

The funding will be administered by the British Museum through its World Collections Programme.

A British Museum spokeswoman said the details of the exchange had not yet been worked out, but it would most likely be working with other national museums with international collections to develop the programme, and talking to partner institutions in China to find the best match for UK museums.

The Treasury agreed the funding following talks between chancellor George Osborne and Chinese vice president Ma Kai at the annual UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue in London.

Culture secretary Sajid Javid said: “Creating stronger links with China is a top priority for the government, and sharing the very best of our respective cultures is a brilliant way to make this happen.

“This funding means western and eastern cultures can learn from and be enriched by one another… the package marks a really important step for both China and the UK to grow a strong and progressive relationship.

“Our culture and heritage is what makes the UK great, and by making them accessible to new audiences abroad it will also help drive more visitors to our shores.”

Details on how museums can get involved with the exchange will be released shortly.
