MA pilots collections review training in the North West
Sally Cross, the MA's collections coordinator, is overseeing two pilot collections review training sessions this month. The sessions are free and open to anyone interested in learning how to carry out a collections review…
Using case studies and methodologies from University College London (UCL), Renaissance North West, and Norfolk Museums, the MA, in partnership with UCL, will be holding sessions at The Manchester Museum on the afternoon of Thursday 9 July, and at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle on the morning of Friday 10 July.
Representatives from the Museums Association and from UCL will be at the half-day sessions, which will help delegates to plan a collections review at their museum, considering the time, expertise and resources that will be needed.
The sessions will also help delegates to design an assessment framework for understanding and prioritising items in the collection.
Cross said: "The collections review training is designed to show people how to do a collections review and to help them to think about tailoring the process for their organisation.
"The training will look at disposal, with the caveat that it should only be carried out as part of a larger collections review, but will also explore the other benefits of a review such as knowing what to make better use of and where to focus collections care."
The MA will be rolling out collections review training across the regions and nations of the UK from November onwards.
